South Korea ETA Frequently Asked Questions

The Korea Electronic Travel Authorization, or K-ETA, is a new entry permit for visa-exempt travelers.

It can be obtained with any type of eligible passport, including ordinary, service, and a diplomatic passport. It covers the following travel purposes:

  • Individual Tour / Group Tour
  • Visit
  • Business
  • Medical treatment
  • Meeting
  • Event
  • Games / Match / Competition

From September 2021 eligible travelers must apply for the eTA to enter South Korea. This system contributes to faster border checks. You no longer have to complete the arrival card.

You need a K-ETA if you are from one of the 46 visa-free or 66 visa-waiver countries and wish to visit South Korea for tourism, to visit family, attend meetings or events, or for non-profitable business activities.

The South Korea eTA is already available to citizens of 49 nations. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, some countries have not been added yet and are likely to be included later on.

How long you can stay in South Korea with the K-ETA depends on your nationality.

Citizens of most eligible countries can spend up to 90 days in South Korea with the eTA.

In some cases, the maximum length of stay is 30 days.

The South Korea eTA is valid for 3 years from its date of approval.

To get started with your K-ETA application, you only need a valid passport from one of the eligible countries. Citizens of most nations can apply.

The only other requirements are a recent photograph which is uploaded digitally, and a credit or debit card to pay the application fee.

Minors under 17 years of age do not need to apply for the electronic travel authorization to travel to South Korea; however, it is still recommended.

You do not need a K-ETA to transit through an airport in South Korea, provided you will stay in the airport. If you need to pass through immigration to collect luggage or for any other reason, you must have a valid eTA.

The South Korea eTA is valid for 3 years and can be used to travel to the country multiple times. However, if your passport expires, you will need to apply for a new K-ETA.

If you travel to Jeju island you must obtain K-ETA before boarding the plane or ship.

No, you may not work in South Korea with a K-ETA. A visa for the Republic of Korea is required if you wish to enter employment or carried out paid work.

The South Korea eTA is for tourism, visiting family, attending events and meetings, and business trips.

If you have two passports due to dual nationality, you must choose the passport you will use to travel to South Korea.

There cannot be any discrepancies between the information on the approved South Korea eTA and the passport you travel with.

The decision to grant or deny visas is entirely at the discretion of the Republic of Korea government authorities.
